Students in the Calgary Board of Education travel to school in a variety of ways, including walking, taking yellow buses or Calgary Transit or being driven by parents/guardians. Their safety is important, no matter how they get to school and home again.

Attendance and Punctuality

Regular attendance and punctuality are essential and expected for student success. If your child will be absent or late, please notify the school by leaving a message on the absence line. Your cooperation helps us ensure the safety and well-being of all students. If a student is absent and we have not been notified, office staff will attempt to contact parents or guardians at home or at work.

Students arriving late must report to the office before proceeding to class.

Before and After School Procedures

BEFORE SCHOOL: Cranston School follows a soft entry routine. Beginning at 7:50 a.m., students are welcomed by an adult at entrance doors and they enter the school independently. There is no outdoor supervision on the playground before school. For safety reasons, please ensure your child does not arrive before 7:50 a.m. and that they proceed immediately to an entrance door upon arrival.

AFTER SCHOOL: Kindergarten and Grade 1 students are released directly to a parent or designated adult/sibling at their exit door each day. Students in Grades 2 to 4 are dismissed independently. All students are expected to go home promptly upon dismissal unless they are directly supervised by a parent or guardian. For safety reasons, we strongly discourage students from staying to play on the playground after school, as there is no outdoor supervision at that time.

Drop-off, Pick-up, and Sign-out Procedures

For the safety of all students, please do not use the school parking lot for drop-off or pick-up. With the high volume of students and vehicles, this creates a significant safety risk.  Please do not park in the bus zones at the front of the school at any time.

Instead, we encourage families to use the designated “Drop and Drive” zone, which helps reduce congestion and promotes student independence.

Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds during the school day without prior permission from the office. If you need to pick up your child during school hours, please contact the office in advance and at least 15 minutes prior to lunch or the end of the school day. All students must be signed out by a pre-assigned adult at the main office before leaving the building during school hours.

Active Routes to School

Students are welcome and encouraged to ride their bikes, scooters, etc. to school. However, for safety reasons, they must walk their bikes or scooters when crossing streets and while on school grounds. Students and adults should not ride through the parking lot under any circumstances.

The school is not responsible for lost or stolen bikes. Please ensure your child brings a lock and knows how to use it independently. For safety reasons, skateboards, rollerblades, “wheelie shoes,” and similar items are not allowed inside the school.
