School Supervision
Before School
Cranston has a ‘soft entry’ practice. This means that as soon as students arrive at 7:55 they are greeted at their entrance door and are admitted directly into the school. For safety reasons, please ensure your child does not arrive at school before 7:55am and that they go directly to their entrance door upon arrival.
After School
Students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 are handed directly to an adult at their exit door each day. Students in Grades 2-4 are dismissed on their own. All students should go home promptly at dismissal each day unless directly supervised by a parent. There is no outdoor supervision after school.
School Access
For safety reasons, please ensure your child does not arrive at school prior to 7:45 AM and 11:50 AM because outdoor supervision by authorized personnel is not scheduled until those times. Students should not arrive at school before supervisors are on duty.
All doors to the school, with the exception of the front door, will be locked after school commences each day. All students will enter the building through their assigned doors. Children arriving late must be escorted into the school with a parent/guardian through the front door and report to the office. Parents must sign their child in.
Custody (CBE Policy 3059)
The CBE has a policy of neutrality. CBE staff are not permitted to provide letters of opinion or support or to be interviewed by lawyers, parents, or other professionals pertaining to a custody dispute. If you have extraordinary concerns regarding the safety of your child, please discuss them with the principal.
Court Documents
The school requires a current and complete copy of any court orders governing the custody/access of a registered student. These are kept in the child's student file. The School Act requires a copy of the order so we can identify who has legal access to the student and to information and decisions about their education. It is the custodial parent's responsibility to provide the school has the most recent court order. In a situation where parents are recently separated and/or no court documentation is in place, the school will defer to the parent who ordinarily resides with the child (Custodial Parent).
Visitors & Volunteers Sign-In
All visitors must sign in the office upon arrival and wear their volunteer tag which is in the office. When leaving, volunteers must sign out and return volunteer tag.
Parents and visitors are not permitted to enter classroom or hallway areas during instructional time.
All volunteers must complete a volunteer registration form and a police security clearance form in the office before volunteering. Two pieces of identification, including photo ID, must be presented at that time. Please check with the school secretary if you require further information. Security clearances are valid for 5 years.
Lockdowns
All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.
Evacuation Procedures
In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
Video Surveillance Technology
The Calgary Board of Education may install and use video surveillance technology at select schools to support maintaining a safe and secure environment and to help control vandalism and criminal activity on school property.
Personal information gathered by video surveillance is collected under the authority of the Education Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) section 33(b). The users of this information are the principal or designate and law enforcement personnel in the case of reported incidents that would require an investigation. Only authorized persons will review video surveillance information.
This technology is considered a complement to, and not a replacement for, CBE's strategies in supporting a welcoming, caring, safe, and respectful learning and work environment for students and staff.
Approval, installation and use of video surveillance technology will comply with Administrative Regulation 1066.
For questions or concerns, please contact the school principal.
