General Health Measures

In all matters of health, CBE takes direction from Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services. Find out how you can reduce the spread and lessen the impact of illness in school communities.

Routine Immunizations

The CBE supports the AHS school-based immunization program.

Attendance Line 403-777-6267  ext. 1.

It is important that you call the school if your child is going to be absent or late due to an illness or medical/dental appointment.

Illness

When a student is ill, parents will be contacted and expected to come to the school to pick up their child within the hour. We cannot supervise children sick at school for an extended period of time. Under the Health Act some diseases such as chicken pox, whooping cough, measles, Fifth Disease and pink eye require treatment or exclusion before being able to return.

The school should be made aware of any medical conditions so that we can assist your child in an emergency (e.g., allergic reactions, epilepsy, asthma, precautions due to medical conditions, etc.) School personnel are not authorized to dispense medicine to a child without written consent. All students with asthma must have their puffers available. Students with severe allergies must always have 1 EpiPen in the school for safety. If your child has special medical requirements (e.g., allergic reactions, epilepsy, asthma, precautions due to medical conditions, etc.) please ensure you have completed the necessary forms at the beginning of the year and update them, as necessary. Forms are available in the main office.

Medication and Special Medical Needs

Parents or guardians requesting school assistance with their child’s medication and special medical needs are required to complete the following forms.

Student Health Emergency Response Protocol Form

  • This form is to be used when there is a student health issue. This includes when there is a request to administer medication.

Student Health Plan

This form is to be:

  • completed if a physical or medical condition may affect the student’s attendance at school
  • completed if medication is to be taken at school
  • reviewed and updated annually or sooner if there is a change in the student’s health concern or school registration.

Injuries at School

Should your child be involved in an accident on the playground or in the school, staff will assess the situation. Minor injuries will be treated appropriately. In the case of more serious injuries, parents will be notified immediately. If necessary, staff may call 911 to seek qualified medical assistance. Children may be transported to the hospital by ambulance. Should this be necessary, parents must assume the cost of this service (this is not covered by Alberta Health Care). CBE (Calgary Board of Education) staff are not permitted to transport sick or injured children to the hospital but will travel in the ambulance if a legal guardian is not available. Parents should keep the original copy of the ambulance bill so that they can submit it to a private Health Insurance Plan if applicable.

Community Health Nurse

The Calgary Health Region has assigned a nurse who provides support to our school as requested.  The nurse can provide information about vision and hearing screen tests and vaccinations, and will provide general health support as needed.

Illnesses and Allergies

Families of children with allergies must fill out a health form in the school office each school year and must ensure the school has the necessary medication on-hand should a reaction occur. For safety reasons medication should be stored in the office. Staff are trained annually in the administration of an Epipen.

Nut and Scent Aware

At Cranston School we are committed to providing a safe environment that is inclusive for all.

NUTS AND NUT PRODUCTS: There are several Cranston students and staff who have potentially life-threatening nut and tree nut allergies. Cranston School uses a ‘nut aware’ approach, as we can’t guarantee that someone hasn’t accidentally brought nuts, or traces of nuts, into our building. While we realize that this request may pose a minor inconvenience for you when preparing your child’s snack and lunch, we would like to express our appreciation for your support and understanding as we work together to support our students and staff with severe allergies.

SCENTS: In support of the needs of those individuals who have sensitivities or medical conditions related to scents, Cranston School is a scent-reduced and scent-sensitive environment. Students and visitors should not wear scented products such as perfumes, colognes, or scented lotions to school.

Special Occassion Treats

In keeping with CBE Administrative Regulation #3047 and our commitment to providing a safe environment that is inclusive for all children, staff will not distribute special occasion treats sent from home. If you would like to recognize your child’s birthday or a special holiday, please send non-food items like fancy pencils or stickers, or consider donating a book to the school library in your child’s name. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Lice

There may be times during the school year when we have cases of head lice.

If your child has head lice, please contact the school and let us know. If your child has been exposed to lice at school we will notify you.

As a precaution, we ask all parents to check their child’s head frequently for a few weeks after any exposure. You can find more information on lice from myhealth.alberta.ca.
