Principal’s Post
Over the course of the fall, students and staff have been exploring the crane as a new symbol for our school. Through art, research, story writing, and thoughtful discussion, students have been learning about the many layers of meaning a crane can hold and how a school logo can reflect our identity, values, and place. With support from the CBE graphic design team, this learning journey led to the creation of three crane-inspired logo options (sent out by email).
The crane is a meaningful and fitting symbol for our school community for several reasons:
Local Connection
- The name Cranston comes from an Old English term meaning “town of cranes.”
- Cranes migrate through Alberta’s prairies, river valleys, and wetlands, including areas right below us in Fish Creek Park.
- Cranes hold significance within Indigenous knowledge and teachings connected to Treaty 7 and our home here in Mohkinstsis.
Symbolic and Cultural Meaning
- Cranes represent longevity, wisdom, peace, hope, harmony, and good fortune.
- These themes align beautifully with the names of our school hallways, Peace, Hope, and Harmony.
- They also support the character development, citizenship, and well-being we nurture every day at Cranston.
Educational Metaphors
- Flight reflects aspiration and students “taking off” in their learning.
- Migration represents each child’s unique academic path, and offers an opportunity to learn about others and the journey that families have taken to settle in Calgary
- Caring for young symbolizes the supportive role of educators in our community.
As students prepare to vote next week, we are excited to continue this journey together. We look forward to discovering which design our students feel best represents our school and to embracing a symbol that will carry us forward for years to come.
Reminders & Ramblings
- It is with mixed feelings that we announce the retirement of one of our beloved Educational Assistants, Ms. Lanette Ballard. After years of dedicated service, retirement has been calling, and Ms. Ballard has decided it’s time to embrace this new chapter. Her last day with us will be December 19th, after which she will be off on new adventures and enjoying more time with her family. Ms. Ballard has made an immense and lasting impact on countless students at Cranston. While we are sad to see her go, we are deeply grateful for her unwavering care, kindness, and devotion to supporting the lives of so many learners. Congratulations on your well-deserved retirement, Ms. Ballard! You will be greatly missed.
- Alberta Health Services declared a Respiratory Outbreak at Cranston School on Monday December 1. If your child is unwell, please keep them home from school and call the school absence line. You can support us in our daily AHS reporting by sharing the symptoms your child is experiencing. Thank you for helping us stop the spread.
- On Thursday the school admin team, a teacher representative, & school council members welcomed the City of Calgary’s Mobility & Traffic Safety Team, Calgary Police Service, Calgary Board of Education, & Ever Active Schools for a community “walkabout.” This student-led program helps identify ways to improve traffic safety around our school. Safer streets mean safer kids! 🚸💛 Thank you for doing your part to keep the roads safe for our students.
