Remembrance Day:
On Friday, our school community gathered for our Remembrance Day Ceremony to honour the courage and sacrifices of those who have served and continue to serve our country. We also recognized Indigenous Veterans Day, observed on November 8, honouring the bravery and dedication of Indigenous men and women in service. The contributions of Canada’s military members, past and present, remain a vital part of our shared history. We were honoured to welcome Captain Charan Kamal Singh Dullat, Pharmacy Officer with 15 Field Ambulance and Local Chair of the Defense Visible Minority Advisory Group to our ceremony on Friday. Captain Dullat, also a Senator at the University of Calgary, laid the Cranston wreath in tribute to those who served. We thank him for joining us and for his continued service to our country.
School Logo:
Exciting news! We’re working with the CBE design team to create a new logo for Cranston School. As part of this process, students and staff have been exploring the crane as a meaningful symbol; one that reflects who we are, where we learn, and what we value as a community. The name Cranston itself means “town of cranes,” and these graceful birds can be found nearby, migrating through the prairies, wetlands, and river valleys around Fish Creek. They remind us of our connection to the land, local ecology, Indigenous knowledge, and of the importance of living in harmony with nature and one another. Across cultures, cranes represent peace, hope, and harmony, the very names above our school hallways. They embody the qualities we seek to nurture in Cranston school; qualities such as teamwork, perseverance, balance, and care.
Our goal is to create a fresh logo that reflects our identity, our place, and our shared values. The CBE design team is currently developing concept drawings based on student and staff ideas, and later this fall, students will help vote on the final design. Once the design is chosen, we’ll be launching an online school store where families can purchase clothing featuring our new logo. We can’t wait to see it take flight!
Reminders & Ramblings
Extra Clothing:
From time to time, students need a change of clothes during the day. Our supply is fully depleted so we’d graciously accept donations of clean, gently used sweatpants or leggings. We’re also accepting new only socks, underwear, and mittens. Thank you for helping us keep everyone warm and comfortable!
Teacher Conferences:
Meetings will take place on the evening of November 27 and the morning of November 28. More information about scheduling and sign-ups will be shared next Friday. Families will need a MyCBE Account to book online. To accommodate the number of children in the morning and afternoon Kindergarten classes, conferences for Kindergarten children will also run during the day on November 27.
Individualized Program Plans:
IPPs will be sent home in backpacks during the week of November 17. If your child receives one, you will have an opportunity to discuss and sign it with the teacher during conferences or at another mutually agreed-upon time before the 28th.
School Council meeting:
We’re excited to introduce our new School Council executive, at our next School Council meeting which will be held in person at the school on November 18 at 6:30 p.m. A virtual link will be shared for those who prefer to join online. Council meetings are a wonderful way to get involved, meet other parents and guardians, and hear updates directly from Mrs. George and Mrs. Bodley about the exciting things happening at the school. All parents and guardians are welcome; no sign-up or formal role is required to attend. We’d love to see some new faces and hope you’ll join us!
Concert Update:
As mentioned in last week's email, the Calgary Board of Education has shared that as classes resume, the focus will be on teaching and learning, and that activities such as performances, field trips, and other school events may be delayed, rescheduled, or cancelled. With this guidance, and given the short time between our return and the busy December concert season, we have decided to adjust our concert schedule for this year. Instead of hosting our usual Winter and Spring concerts, we will hold concerts in the Spring. This change allows students and staff the time to re-establish routines and prepare performances that reflect their best work. We know how much these events mean to our community, and we remain committed to ensuring they continue to be meaningful celebrations of learning and creativity.
