Cranston Connection | October 19 - 23, 2026

Principal's Post

This week, Canadians across the country are invited to recognize Secret Path Week, a time to remember Chanie Wenjack and reflect on our shared responsibility for truth and reconciliation. In October 1966, Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old Anishinaabe boy, died of hunger and exposure while trying to walk 600 km home from the Kenora, Ontario residential school he had been forced to attend. His story, shared through the music and prose of The Secret Path by Gord Downie and Jeff Lemire, has helped Canadians learn about the history and lasting impacts of residential schools.

At Cranston School, we recognize that our commitment to truth and reconciliation begins with our own learning as educators. By deepening our understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, perspectives, and relationships to the land, we are better prepared to create meaningful learning opportunities for our students.

As part of this ongoing commitment, our teaching staff will spend Monday's non-instructional day in Bragg Creek, learning alongside Cree Knowledge Keeper Walter MacDonald White Bear. This full-day land-based learning experience will provide an opportunity for our teachers to deepen their understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and learning, and to consider how these perspectives can be meaningfully woven into the learning experiences we create for students at Cranston School.

Reconciliation is a journey that requires more than words and good intentions. It asks us to continue learning, building relationships, and taking meaningful steps forward together.

Cranston Community and Connections

Our thoughts are with the Canadian Armed Forces and the service members and families of CFB Wainwright as they navigate this weekend's tragic events. We recognize that the impact of such a tragedy reaches far beyond those directly involved, touching families, friends, colleagues, and entire communities.

As Indigenous Veterans Day (November 8) and Remembrance Day (November 11) approach, we are preparing for our annual Wall of Heroes Remembrance Day Slide Show at Cranston School. Each year, this display provides an opportunity to recognize and honour the stories of service members and veterans connected to our students.

We are inviting families to send a digital photo of your current Cranston student as well as a photo of any current service member or veteran in your family. Please email your submission to Ms. Stricker at ojstricker@cbe.ab.ca by Friday, November 6. Please include the following information:

  1. Name of the service member or veteran
  2. Their service unit and when they served
  3. Their relationship to the student
  4. The student's name, grade, and classroom teacher
